Spotlight: Small Talk

The boys we’re giving voice to today come from the south of the United Kingdom, and for a Small Talk, they are making quite a stir! 

The story of this band is a cliché that we will never tire of. Ben Lewis grew up in the beautiful city of Bournemouth, for years, his life revolved around sports. Suddenly, he’s 20 years old, injured, and a global pandemic keeps him locked up at home for months. There’s a lot to take in. But if there’s one thing that defines this guy, it’s bravery. It’s hard to take the leap and change the entire course of your life to chase your dreams. Stories like this succeed thanks to a good partner in crime, so Ben picks up his guitar and calls Harry Whitton, drummer, Small Talk is born. They soon realize they need to recruit more members to become a proper band, Rob White on bass and Mickey Golicher on guitar join the project.

These guys got to work quickly, by early 2022, their first single, ‘Headstart’, was already available. Shortly after, they released ‘Paris’ and ‘Lifeline’, which became a favorite. From the beginning, Small Talk has been full of guitars, garage sound, honest lyrics, and a lot of influence from both past and contemporary British indie pop-rock music. In the lyrics, you’ll find personal experiences, such as the feeling of falling behind, failed relationships, feeling lost, and goodbyes. But in the end, it can be summed up as writing about the life experience of growing up and becoming adults with great sincerity. They accompany these lyrics with very energetic and danceable rhythms and a very special voice. The band is heavily influenced by artists like Sea Girls, Sam Fender, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Inhaler, and The Wombats, they are eager to follow in their footsteps. 

In mid-May 2023, they released their debut EP, which sold out in just 20 hours. Teenage Fear consists of 4 tracks: ‘Teenage Fear’, ‘Lifeline’, ‘Sometimes’, and ‘This Is Not The End’, this work has an incredible sound through headphones, but they didn’t stop there. At the end of that month, they got into a caravan and toured the UK with their The Debut Tour for a week full of anecdotes that they shared on their socials. 

It’s on these social media platforms where they are daily promoting their music, showing and talking honestly about their creative process, and building a community that is growing more and more. Regular Q&A sessions from delayed trains, live streams during their rehearsals, sharing demos of some songs, ticket and merch giveaways, Zoom video calls, and a very active Twitter account—these guys don’t have a day off! 

They spent last summer going from festival to festival, playing wherever they could for anyone who wanted to listen. After a tour of the UK in early October, during which they included their best songs and covers of their favorite artists, it has just been announced that on the 27th of this month, they will release their new song ‘Lost in the Moment’.

Small Talk is a band that combines all the qualities to succeed: good music, sincerity, commitment, friendship, and a lot of hard work.
