Song Review: ‘Eulogy’ by Liang Lawrence

There certainly haven’t been many songs written about Tesco yet, but Liang Lawrence just added one to the list. After teasing her new song ‘Eulogy’ for months on her social media, she finally released the highly anticipated track on the 5th of April. The song, which had been written more than a year ago, went through quite a journey before it got to see the light of day. According to Liang, she was discouraged from releasing it and therefore put it on the shelves for some time. However, on TikTok, where the singer has garnered an impressive 3.7 million likes so far, snippets of the song have received tons of love and fuelled further excitement for its release.

The name of the track – though Liang has also previously dubbed it ‘The Tesco Song’, ‘The Meal Deal Song’ and ‘The Funeral Outside Tesco Song’ – may sound a bit morbid at first. But the singer has already proven with her previous works that she knows how to enthral her listeners with unique metaphors. ‘Eulogy’ is no different. The idea for the song came from an encounter that Liang had with her ex in – you guessed it – a Tesco. As stated by Liang, the incident felt like a funeral for the relationship and every funeral requires a eulogy, one she now officially delivers with the song.

The intimacy of the song is unmatched; it starts with a gentle acoustic guitar and Liang’s sweet voice, and the beginning throws you straight into a conversation between the artist and her former partner. It is an exact re-telling of this moment, with seemingly no details being left out. While it is intended as a eulogy, it might as well be a diary entry or a very personal letter.

As opposed to that, the chorus is more of a what-if situation where Liang fantasises about what might still be done to repair the damage and questions if the other person is willing to put in the effort. In the following verse, the funeral allegory continues. It isn’t until the bridge that the electric guitar kicks in and gives the track the perfect edge.

With ‘Eulogy’, Liang Lawrence once again proves that she is a gifted storyteller whose talent for penning down compelling lyrics and combining them with entrancing melodies makes her an exciting indie voice. Safe to say, the song was worth the wait.
