Live Review: Only The Poets in Warsaw

After the announcement of ‘Lato w Mieście’, which translates to ‘Summer in the City’, a few months ago, many fans were very excited when their musical worlds collided. On July 13th, it was finally time for the concert, which took place at Letnia Scena Progresji in Warsaw. The headliners were Only The Poets and Joker Out, supported by Isaac Anderson and Franek Warzywa + Młody Budda.

A lot of people were waiting for Only The Poets, the band from Reading, consisting of Tommy Longhurst (vocals), Andy Burge (bass), Marcus Yates (drums) and Clem Cherry (guitar). Most of the fans travelled from all around Europe to come there! The fans were very excited about this concert and some of them queued from the early morning to get the best spot at the barricade, even in the bright sunshine.

After getting warmed up by two sets from Franek Warzywa + Młody Budda and Isaac Anderson the crowd was ready to scream and lose their voices. The band went on stage just before the sun went down, so their set took place during golden hour which made it even more special.

Only The Poets played their newest single called ‘Mindset’. Even though the song was still fairly new, the crowd already knew the lyrics and sang along every word with a smile on their face. They also played a few unreleased songs called ‘Bump in the Night’ and ‘Black and Blue’. For the latter, only Tommy and Clem were on stage, which made it even more memorable and special. Speaking of special moments, for many fans the songs ‘It’s Okay (Not to Be Okay)’ and ‘Walking in the Dark’ were very touching. You could instantly see how much these songs mean to their fans, with most people tearing up, hugging the people next to them and just taking in the moment. Moments like these make you realise just how important live music is, spending time with your friends watching the artists you both love.

The fans have started a tradition at Only The Poets’ shows, which is dancing the macarena to ‘Gone By Now’, and of course this had to happen here in Warsaw as well. After getting requested to play ‘Stolen Bikes’, Marcus teased the crowd by starting it on the drums. Unfortunately Tommy cut the moment short by saying “Andy doesn’t like that song”.

The show took place a day before the final of the Football Euro 2024, and since Only The Poets are big football fans, Tommy had to talk about it a couple of times. He even started singing “it’s coming home, it’s coming home”, speaking to the world that England would hopefully bring home the win. As an ending to their set they played ‘Emotional’, which left many people in awe. Even the fans that came for Joker Out were surprised by the energy of their live show. All in all, Only the Poets provided their fans with a magical summer night in Warsaw.
