Festival Review: Superbloom Festival Day 2

Superbloom kicked off day two of the festival weekend on September 8th with the slogan ‘More than a festival, it’s a feeling.’ The lineup for the second day offered a diverse range of performers, including emerging newcomers, German musicians, and international superstars.

While festival visitors were competing with the sun on Saturday, it gradually hid behind the clouds as the day progressed, until it finally gave way to rain. However, this did nothing to dampen the mood.

But let’s have a closer look. The day kicked off with Zartmann taking the Olympic Stage. With a high level of energy and powerful lyrics, he ignited the audience and transformed the morning into a day. The atmosphere in the stadium was correspondingly exuberant.

On the NeoNeo stage, however, Kasi and Antonius put on a very likeable, authentic, and convincing performance. The secret recipe for a great atmosphere was good, honest lyrics, a great connection with the audience, and a down-to-earth attitude. During the set, Antonius even joined the audience to celebrate with them. Zartmann appeared towards the end of the performance as the final icing on the cake, and they captivated the audience together. Kasi also announced a tour for the coming year to thunderous applause.

Perhaps it was the approaching midday low or the already criticised acoustics in the Olympic Stadium, but the atmosphere at the performance by ESC legend Loreen could have been a little better. As a whole, the atmosphere wasn’t bad at all, and the audience sang along vigorously to her greatest hits such as ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Tattoo’. Overall, however, there was still a lot of potential for improvement. In any case, it couldn’t have been her impressive, powerful voice that didn’t quite carry the crowd away.

By contrast, the atmosphere was much more lively during Milky Chance’s performance on the Super Stage, which led to the dreary skies over Munich running into a proper Summer-y headwind. A special highlight was the guest appearance by Jordan Miller from the Canadian band The Beaches. Together, they rocked the Olympic Stadium and offered a foretaste of their band’s later performance.

This was subsequently followed by a special performance by the German singer-songwriter Michael Schulte in the IQOS Festival Lounge. He performed his greatest hits exclusively with the IQOS Unexpected Voices choir. The audience was over the moon. The only drawback: the location was too small for the number of visitors, so a small crowd formed on one of the festival’s main paths before the entrance.

At around the same time, Jorja Smith performed on the Super Stage in the Olympic Stadium. Here, as well, it becomes apparent that several performances coincided at the same time, and one was constantly faced with the dilemma of choosing which performance to witness. However, she impressed above all with her cheerful charisma on stage. It looked as if she was having fun performing.

The performance of Germany’s rap queen Shirin David was one of the highlights for festival visitors. Even if her music is a matter of taste, she delighted her fans in the stadium. One little fan was even able to get very close to her. The 10-year-old was brought on stage to perform the summer hit ‘Bauch, Beine, Po’ with her. Apart from that, however, there was still room for improvement in terms of the atmosphere.

The Beaches, a Canadian rock band, really got the crowd going on the NeoNeo Stage. Per the adage “Girl Power,” their performance was charming, likeable, and simply cool. The four energetic girls conveyed strong ideas and gave the approaching rain a clear message.

One highlight followed the next on this late summer Sunday in September. Next on the programme was the performance by crowd favourite Louis Tomlinson. Not only could you read his name on numerous shirts and jumpers on the festival site throughout the day. The particularly loyal fans had already secured the best seats in front of the stage in the first few hours of the festival to be close to their idol. The wait was worth it for them, though. Louis gave a powerful, atmospheric performance, during which he repeatedly expressed his gratitude to his fans. And the latest, by the time the first chords of the 1D hit ‘Drag me Down’ rang out, there was no stopping the stadium.

The performance by US vocal wonder Natalie Jane turned out to be a surprise. She certainly proved to have plenty of girl power and impressed with her beautiful, clear, powerful and soulful voice. The likeable singer also radiated a lot of positive energy. With the performance of her song ‘Intrusive Thoughts’, she subsequently drew attention to an important topic, mental health awareness, and generated goosebumps galore. She further announced the release of her new album at the end of September. As a small taster, she already introduced a few new songs.

If there’s one band that deserves to be on the world’s biggest stages, it’s Only The Poets. Despite being limited to the NeoNeo Stage at Superbloom, the band delivered a performance that could compete with the larger ones. Only The Poets have everything a good band needs: authentic, down-to-earth, musicians who naturally lend a hand in setting up the stage set; honest and moving lyrics; and the ability to create a safe space for fans to devote themselves fully to their love of live music. The set offered everything the heart could desire, from soulful ballads to cool guitar riffs to energetic sing-along anthems. Along the way, the band’s immense gratitude and their connection to their fan base became evident. The rain in Munich’s evening sky was soon forgotten, and the crowd went wild as if there was no tomorrow.

One performance that will certainly remain in the minds of the festival attendees was the one by One Republic. The band, which has been an integral part of the world’s stages for years, played one hit after another and provided some unique moments. Whether dancing in the rain inside the Olympic Stadium or with a mobile phone torch in the stands — the audience enjoyed every second of the super band’s diverse set.

Finally, we have arrived at the grand finale of the whole festival. The performance by the renowned DJ Calvin Harris. In a show packed with exciting special effects, he played one mega-hit after another. Despite the rain, the atmosphere was joyous, and the Olympic Stadium was once again transformed into the biggest dance floor and the best choir in Munich. Nevertheless, the vibe could not quite keep up with that of the previous evening with the Chainsmokers, which may have been due to the weather and the day of the week. As an alternative programme to Calvin Harris, Joost Klein gave an exciting performance on the Neo Neo Stage. The fans of the ‘Friesenjung’ celebrated him properly and danced in the mud until late in the evening, initiating one mosh pit after another.

In addition to the diverse musical acts, the Superbloom festival site naturally had numerous other attractions to offer. In addition to a wide range of food, there were souvenir stands, smaller locations for karaoke singing, a Big wheel, boat hire, the opportunity to ride a rodeo and much more. Superbloom proved that it is versatile and colourful.

The fourth edition of the festival has already been announced for August 30th and 31st 2025, for all those who have now acquired a taste for it. Strictly limited tickets are currently available at the loyalty price.
