On November 24th Corey Taylor’s solo tour came to an end and this show at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg was sold out pretty quickly, which is why they added a second date a week earlier. The night kicked off with Oxymorrons, with two R’s not one!
Oxymorrons do not like to put themselves in a box and define their genre, they think music is a frequency and a frequency doesn’t have a genre. You’ll hear rapping, singing and screaming. The crowd seemed to like them and clapped along when asked. Their song ‘Insomnia’ is about, what you might have guessed, not having a lot of sleep. This is especially the case while on tour when it is hard to get a lot of sleep due to playing a lot of shows and being on the road.
‘Look Alive (Netic)’ means a lot to the band, since the (Netic) in the title stands for Netic Rebel. He was a big part of the Afropunk movement and was a great inspiration for the band, he sadly passed away last year. This song is in no way sad, but more a celebration of life. With lots of inspirational speeches throughout their set, they ended off by asking everyone to put their phone flashlights on and in the air. They like to think about everyone being a firefly in a mason jar, with the mason jar being the building that we’re in. After the venue lit up, they ended their set with ‘Justice’. After the song ended they went down in front of the barricade to give everyone fist bumps before leaving for the night.
When the lights dimmed down, the song ‘The Box’ could be heard through the speakers. Their drummer came on stage and gave us a drum solo. After this, the rest of the band and Corey Taylor himself joined the stage. The set was filled with songs from all projects Corey is a part of, so even if you only know him from Slipknot or Stone Sour you will be able to sing along. ‘We Are The Rest’ got the crowd chanting along loudly to the catchy chorus.
Before getting into ‘Before I Forget’ Corey teased the crowd by starting all his sentences with “before I forget”, which got the crowd cheering every time. After finally playing it, Corey got an acoustic guitar for the next two songs. First up the theme song from ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and then ‘Snuff’ from Slipknot. On this tour, he is accompanied by fellow Stone Sour member, Christian Martucci. They decided to dig up an older Stone Sour song, ‘30/30-150’, which hasn’t been on the setlist for many years.
After coming back on stage for the encore they had two more songs for us. Corey Taylor took his shirt off, before getting into the Slipknot song ‘Duality’. The crowd loved it and screamed along loudly. They ended their set with a cover of the song ‘Fairies Wear Boots’ by Black Sabbath, which was a bit of a downer after ‘Duality’. Might have been better to switch the order of the last two songs, but that was just a minor detail on such an amazing night.
