Live Review: Electric Callboy in Berlin

Electric Callboy’s concert on Friday night was not just electric; it was also so much fun!

The queue was already very long well before doors opened at 6 pm. Black was the predominant clothing colour, but a lot of fans also came in the iconic 90s tracksuit and wig outfit which is an important part of Electric Callboy’s history, style-wise. A fan dressed up as a hamburger could also be seen. With 12.000 people attending the show, some only made it inside as the first band had already taken the stage.

Hailing from Japan, opener SiM, short for Silence iz Mine, got the party started at 7 pm. The four-member alternative metal band was anything but silent and warmed up the crowd just right. The second opener, Nothing More, started at 7:45 pm, and shortly after, it was already time for Electric Callboy.

Starting off with a bang, during the first song, the confetti cannons fired for the first time, suggesting a promising night. Throughout their set, Electric Callboy made it clear that having fun is one of the core values of the band. Vocalists Nico Sallach and Kevin Ratajczak entertained the audience not just with their performances but also with funny stories and conversations.

Spreading their top songs across the whole set list, the show started with ‘Tekkno Train’, and a few songs later, the entire arena sang along to Cascada’s cover ‘Everytime We Touch’. Perfectly suited for a show in Berlin, ‘Castrop-Spandau’ also made an appearance, referencing both the band’s hometown and a district of Berlin. Soon after the hit ‘Hypa Hypa’, it was time for yet another cover song. Contrary to popular belief, metalcore or post-hardcore bands do not just like dark and serious music; sometimes singing Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’ is all they need, and that’s exactly what Electric Callboy did — with support from the whole crowd.

Creating an authentic party atmosphere, no savings were made on the use of confetti and pyrotechnics, and so the euphoric spirit got carried across the whole room. Despite the fire strobes that heated the hall even to the very back, Electric Callboy didn’t cut down on their energetic performance at any moment. You could tell they didn’t want the concert to end, and neither did the fans. Yet, after two encores, eventually, the time had come for the concert to end. A giant “Thank You“ banner rolled down, and the band took a picture with the crowd.

As everyone made their way out of the venue, joyful faces could be seen all around, and the party spirit could still be felt. In the following days, many people will have TEKKNO music stuck in their heads.

Electric Callboy is on tour until March 2nd. Most shows are already sold out.
