Live Review: Kasi in Munich

On the evening of the 6th of February, German singer Kasi put on a sold-out show at the Muffathalle in Munich as part of the “Kleine Tour, großer Abriss” tour. He performed together with Antonius, a fellow singer and also his producer, and was also joined by the guitarist and bassist Johannes. Kasi returned to the city after having played a sold-out show at the Backstage Halle last November, making the leap from a 450-capacity venue then to an 1170-capacity venue now.

First on stage was the support act – German Singer Vince, with his friend Fatjon, who functioned as his photographer, videographer, and also DJ for the night. From the first song ‘letzter sommer’, fans already began to sing the words back to the stage. To the question “Munich, what’s going on, are you doing well ? Are you up for a good evening?” the crowd cheered loudly. He then followed with the song ‘besser als ich’. The 4th song of the night was ‘zwischen beats & rauch‘, which he introduced by explaining that “it’s a rather calmer song, but it got created during a rather chaotic time”, this time being his time as a student in Freiburg, where he got to know Kasi, Antonius and Fatjon. During the song, fans waved their hands in the air, while lighting up the room with phone lights.

Next was his newly released song ‘kleine freche jungs‘ which he released with Antonius. After this song and the next one ‘manchmal’, he said “Thank you!” to the crowd, accompanied by a huge applause. The set ended with ‘wie papier’, which Vince made with Kasi and Antonius. Before going off stage, he mentioned going on his own tour (May 6th in Munich) and also asked the room to cheer loudly for Kasi and Antonius.

Next on stage were Kasi, Antonius and Johannes. Filled with great anticipation for their set already, people cheered immediately when the lights in the room went off and the three walked on stage. The crowd started to sing along right from the start of the first song ‘immatrikuliert’. This song was followed by ‘hausnummer_16_v7’, which is part of the last EP Kasi and Antonius released together in mid-October of last year. The next song ‘zwischen allem und nichts’ was introduced by Kasi explaining it’s part of their first EP, and that it’s a song to dance to. Fans put their hands up towards the middle of the song and the room was filled with claps, to which Kasi responded “Thank you so much Munich!”

Kasi expressed gratitude on behalf of everyone on stage for people having come to the show and also asked the crowd to mostly put their phones away for the duration of the evening. They did the beginning of ‘meinen die uns’, of which people passionately screamed “Fick die AfD, ich frag’ mich wirklich, wer die wählt”. They then went over to the song ‘einszweidrei’, introducing it by Kasi explaining that “every song of the evening got mostly produced in Antonius’ student room and that they had stress with their neighbour because of that”. During that song, Antonius himself went into the crowd and fans started a moshpit together with him.

After that, Kasi made sure to say his deepest thank you to the crowd for having come this evening and that their shows are for everyone, emphasising that everyone’s comfort is important and to say if something is wrong. The crowd went all out non-stop: when they did the unreleased song ‘mit dem kopf durch die wand’, the room started jumping and during ‘leicht beschwipst_demo2’ the concert hall got lit up beautifully with people’s phone lights. Following this, Kasi shouted out Antonius for having designed all their merch! Going on before the song ‘Boys Do Cry’, he underlined that it’s okay for men to cry.

During ‘tausend tattoos’ Antonius said “Munich, it’s so much fun with you, thank you!” and asked for the whole room to jump. He sang his song ‘Blue’ alone on stage, during which people hugged. Next to their own music, they also covered ‘Nur ein Wort’ by Wir sind Helden in their set! When they did ‘vielleicht in einem jahr’ the crowd went down and then jumped up. As the last song before the encore, they again did the song ‘meinen die uns’, but this time with a twist, as surprise guest German singer Ennio joined them on stage! Right at the start of the song, Kasi used his voice to speak out against the AfD and the CDU, with at least two signs against the AfD in the first few rows of the room.

After this they all went off stage, then resurfaced after fans shouted ‘encore’ repeatedly, to play ‘freiburg-berlin’. Kasi re-introduced Ennio after this, saying “when we already have the king of the neighbourhood here..”, then Ennio walked on stage again. They did Ennio’s song ‘König der Nachbarschaft’. Followed by ‘immatrikuliert’ again, this time also with Vince and Ennio on stage. This was met with great enthusiasm as fans put their hands up and pointed to the stage.

To conclude, Kasi shouted out his crew, mentioning that “you’re supposed to go when it’s the most beautiful” and again expressing his gratitude for people having been at the show and repeating that it was lots of fun! When the show had ended, the crowd could hear his voice from the speakers, announcing that there would be shows at the end of the year in Freiburg and Frankfurt. It was a wonderful evening, where fans had fun from the first song of Vince’s set all the way up to the very end of Kasi’s and Antonius’ one.
