Live Review: Maren Morris in Amsterdam

On November 17th Maren Morris played at Melkweg in Amsterdam, with support from Bea & Her Business. When Bea entered the stage, it was clear she meant business. The crowd was shy at first, but soon the audience seemed to warm up to Bea & Her Business’ sound. She started her set with her breakthrough song ‘Safety Net’. Although a lot of people were not familiar with this song yet, they danced along like they were.

After performing her newest single ‘Rich’, Bea told the audience a little bit of background story from the next song. This song is about how she used to hate her body. This song helped her find closure with this issue. She performed it solo on keys. This setting felt very intimate. She also talks about how it only took 30 minutes to write this song, as if it just poured out of her. She giggled, saying she finds it difficult to be deep. Next, she asked the crowd if anyone had been in a toxic friendship. That is what ‘We’re Not The Same’ is about.

Bea also performed an unreleased song: ‘Delicate As Fuck’. When she asked the crowd if they liked it, the crowd cheered loud as fuck. For the following song, Bea taught the audience a chant.  When she would sing “I gotta stop waiting”, the audience would chant “Good things! Good things!” This made ‘Good Things’ a very fun and interactive performance. She ended her set with ‘born to be alive’.

In between Bea and Marens’ set, there was a lot of buzz going on, especially at the front row. People were talking with each other about how impressive Bea her performance had been. “I never heard of her, but she’s really good. She most definitely can sing!” someone said. Bea had charmed all different ages with her performance. There were even some people discussing how they would definitely go see her, if she were to do another headline tour.

Maren Morris entered the stage under flashing strobe lights. She started her set with ‘cry in the car’, followed by ‘80s Mercedes’. After her second song of the night, she took a moment to thank everyone for showing up on a monday evening. This was the perfect quote to introduce ‘people still show up’.  Maren gave a little bit of background story, before she started with ‘bed no breakfast’. She talked about how she liked her bed and her sheets and having them all to herself without the chitchat.  This particular song is about people who overstay her welcome.

After singing ‘too good’, Morris introduced ‘be a bitch’ by asking her fans if anyone had experienced their kindness being weaponized against them. Unfortunately, there were far too many in the crowd who related to that experience.

After singing ‘grand bouquet’, Morris opened up about how Dreamsicle had been such an emotional album to write. The writing of the album had been difficult, but the touring was the fun part. She did feel like writing this album and performing these songs made her feel empowered instead of sad. Next up were ‘dreamsicle’, ‘holy smoke’ and ‘The Middle’. During ‘lemonade’, she introduced all of her band members.

After a few more songs and ‘My Church’, Morris stated she didn’t want to leave, so she just kept chatting with her fans. She decided she needed to tell her agent the next tour should be ending here, in Amsterdam. She thanked the crowd for showing off their flash lights during ‘carrying me through’. She thought it was very pretty. Her next to last song was ‘because of course’, and she ended with a fan favorite ‘The Bones’.
