Live Review: Maryn Charlie in Amsterdam

Up-and-coming artist Maryn Charlie introduces herself to the audience at her release party at the Melkweg with a song that is called ‘Coming of Age’. It is about all the struggles and epiphanies that come with growing up. Maryn is an Amsterdam native and throughout the night we hear songs about stress, overthinking, self-doubt and sabotage. All are relatable topics to the Gen Z generation. And it seems that’s what Maryn’s current fanbase is made of, young adults between 18 and 25 are swaying to her captivating voice as the night goes on.

Next up are the songs ‘Welcome To My Brain’ and ‘Overthinker’. She follows them with her song ‘Negative Gravity’. Her song ‘Overwhelmed’ is about the sometimes uneasy and unhappy conversations you can have while going through therapy. Maryn finds being able to talk about problems and work through them is what makes her able to use these emotions in her songwriting.

Maryn is more than just strong vocals. In the thank-you speeches this evening, she clearly shows how grateful she is for the people she gets to work with. One of these people is musician Melle. A young guitarist and songwriter that Maryn co-wrote, and performed the opening song ‘Coming Of Age’ with. [A song about the struggles of growing up, dealing with adult responsibilities, and being less carefree.]

Luckily for Maryn, she has found herself in music and it looks like she has a successful career ahead of her. Her indie-pop sound is a hit with the people at the Melkweg as the concert comes to an end. She finishes off with her current hit ‘Self Sabotage’. The crowd seems to love it and show their appreciation by throwing roses on the stage. As Maryn leaves the stage the crowd is chanting for an encore. After the show ends everyone rushes to the hallway to scan the QR code to get access to Maryn Charlie’s brand new EP Out Of The Blue.

It was a successful evening for Maryn Charlie, an upcoming pop star of the lowlands (maybe she’ll be playing there next year?). We can’t wait to see what life brings the 25-year-old singer.
