Live Review: Nova Twins in Tilburg

Starting their month-long tour just the day before in Utrecht, Nova Twins set foot at the NEXT Stage of Poppodium 013 in Tilburg on the 18th of September for their second show in The Netherlands. Supporting them on this tour is fellow British band HotWax.

Doors opened at 7 PM, and with the stormy weather outside, fans did not queue early, but instead slowly trickled into the venue. An hour later, HotWax made their way to the stage. The band consists of guitarist and vocalist Tallulah Sim-Savage, bassist Lola Sam, and drummer Alfie Sayers. Their set included their latest release, ‘Tell Me Everything’s Alright’. Before one of their songs Sim-Savage told the crowd “I wanna see everyone twerk”, which unfortunately not too many people did. The crowd also seemed a bit on the older side, so not exactly the right people for some twerking.

A little over half an hour later, after the stage had been transformed with big white flowers, it was time for Nova Twins. The duo consist of vocalist and guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South, joined on stage by drummer Jake Woodward. The duo has some big custom pedalboards, specifically made for their shows and able to make all sorts of sounds happen. They started their set with ‘Black Roses’, followed by ‘Sandman’. During the shows Love kept switching between her guitar and no guitar, giving her all the room to move over the stage. Before getting into the next song, the bodypack of South’s IEMs died and had to quickly be fixed. While this was getting resolved, Love was killing time by getting to know the crowd. Shortly after, they could start their song ‘Cleopatra’, followed by ‘Taxi’ and ‘Soprano’.

This current tour is called ‘Parasites & Butterflies’, named after their latest album. Love asked the crowd how they were feeling, first asking if they were feeling more parasite and then if they were feeling more butterfly. The latter received the most cheers, which resulted in Love saying how there were quite a few happy people in the crowd. During the song ‘N.O.V.A.’, the crowd was split down the middle, naming the left side butterflies and the right side parasites. They then started a battle to see who could be the loudest for the “What’s the name, bitch? Say our name, All you bitches say, N-O-V-A” bit of the song. The butterfly half of the crowd won and we then did the same part again together with the whole crowd.

In true concert fashion, the band walked off stage and not even a second later the crowd started chanting “we want more”. Nova Twins of course came back to treat the crowd to three more songs in their encore: ‘Antagonist’, ‘Monsters’, and ‘Glory’. Between the songs, Love thanked the crowd for coming along to the ‘Parasites & Butterflies’ tour and thanked HotWax for opening tonight. They also thanked the crowd for being the best community they could’ve asked for and noted how this was probably the longest set they have ever played. Their set ended with ‘Glory’, which received a sea of phone lights in the air and the crowd happily clapping along to the song. In the middle of the song the music stopped, followed by the sound of a door bell and then continued the rest of the song. Their current tour runs until October 18th, all shows and tickets can be found here.
