Live Review: Picture This in Hamburg

The evening of Tuesday August 5th the Irish band Picture This played a show in Hamburg at Draussen im Grünen as part of their ‘2025 Summer Tour’. The show was packed and before doors there were already lines of people in front of the two entrances.

Picture This – Ryan Hennessy (vocals), Cliff Deane (bass), Owen Cardiff (guitar), Jimmy Rainsford (drums) – and with them on stage Nicky Brennan (guitar), put on an amazing evening for all attendees. Fans were clapping, waving, singing and dancing along. It was a rainy evening and just before they went on stage the sky turned sunny. They started with the song ‘LA House Party’, the crowd already clapping along and full of energy. Followed by ‘Act of Innocence’ and ‘Things Are Different’. After which Ryan said “Guten Abend” (good evening in German) and “Thank you so much for being here” to the crowd. After the song ‘Family Out Of Friends’, he pointed out Irish Flags and two Irish Jerseys in the audience.

Just before the next song, ‘Addict of Magic’, Ryan mentioned it feeling intimate [up on stage] and added that he feels like he knows them [the crowd] personally and described it as ‘very nice’. Introducing the song ‘Jane’ he said fans have been saying it’s a funeral song and explained that it’s rather a love song and that all of their songs are love songs really. Leading up to the song ‘Drink It Down To There’, Ryan jokingly said that Drinking is what Irish and German people have in common. Someone from the crowd shouted “Slàinte” (Irish for cheers), he replied with the same and “Prost” (German for cheers). After the song he checked in with the fans by saying “Alles Klar?” (everything alright?) and said “this is a fun show” and hoped for the crowd to have a fun time as well.

During ‘Parked Car Conversations’ Cliff threw a tambourine to Ryan, which he managed to catch. After the song Ryan introduced the band. When he introduced Cliff, he said that it was his birthday recently, which led to a loud ‘Happy Birthday’ chant for him! After introducing Owen, Jimmy, Nicky and himself, the audience shouted their respective names. Picture This surprised the crowd with the first world wide performance of the singer Joris’ and their upcoming release ‘Heart over Head’. Joris joined the band on stage for that song as one more surprise!

During ‘Addicted to You’ Ryan smiled and then took a photo with a Polaroid camera of the crowd and pointed to fans. For the song ‘You & I’ the crowd and the band went down and jumped up and let loose. Introducing the song ‘Take My Hand’, Ryan explained that it’s the first song they released as a band and went on to express gratitude on behalf of the whole band.

They finished their set with ‘Get On My Love’. For a part of the song Ryan splitted the crowd in the middle and asked the left side to sing it, then the right side and then together. Then, together with the band, they continued to sing quieter and quieter and then louder again. Looking into the crowd with gratitude, ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA started playing on the speakers and Picture This started walking off stage.
