Live Review: PVRIS in Utrecht

For the first time in 7 years, American pop-rock band PVRIS made their way back onto the stage of Tivoli in Utrecht and we had the pleasure of being there.

Whilst the crowd was slowly filling up the room, it was up to Scene Queen to start the night off. Her songs, having feminist themes combined with her humour, were the perfect combination for a great start to the night. From twerkle pit to a metal version of the hoedown throwdown, she was able to win over the crowd in no time.

Smiling from ear to ear she engaged with the crowd throughout her set. “This is a song about catcalling! Wait, why did you cheer? You’re not supposed to cheer for that!!” “Is it okay if I perform a gay song? Well good, I would’ve done it either way but I’m glad you said yes.” Swinging and slaying up on that stage, she managed to make the crowd ready for the rest of the night whilst also undoubtedly gaining some new fans in the meantime.

After a short break, it was time for PVRIS to entertain the crowd. Starting with ‘I DON’T WANNA DO THIS ANYMORE, ‘ANIMAL’ and ‘Dead Weight,’ they were able to grab the full attention of the crowd and managed to hold onto it throughout the rest of the set. “Hello Utrecht! It’s amazing to be back here, it’s been so long! Has it been 7 years? Did I do the math right?” Lynn Gunn says to the audience. “We have been doing this for 10 years now, and hearing the stories about people coming to our shows and making new friends, new lovers, new… exes all have been so rewarding. We can’t believe it’s been 10 years already and we don’t take it lightly. We appreciate you guys so much. With that being said, make a friend tonight, make a lover, make an enemy, wait DON’T DO THAT.”

One thing I noticed throughout PVRIS their set is how little phones I’ve seen in the audience. PVRIS seems to have established a dynamic between the music and the fans that leave people wanting to be in the moment and take it all in, and if that doesn’t speak to how good they are, then I don’t know what does.

Throughout the night the crowd in Utrecht managed to confuse Lynn for a little with their chanting.”Ooooh, it’s U!! This whole time I was thinking we did something wrong but you’re not booing, you’re saying ‘u’ I get it now. People with anxiety would not do well up here, I’ll tell you that”

A couple of circle pits later it was time for PVRIS to end the night. Closing the set with ‘GODDESS’ with a surprise appearance from Scene Queen, they left their fans with the memories of a night they won’t forget for a long time.
