On Saturday, May 18th, it was finally time for the Tiny Habits concert. Tiny Habits is a folk-pop trio from Boston. Together with their supporting band Shallow Alcove, a promising night is ahead at Luxor in Cologne.
By the time Shallow Alcove, the opening act, set foot on stage at 7 pm the venue was already packed. Shallow Alcove quickly captured the audience with their gentle voices and melodic songs. Someone in the crowd even asked for their name again halfway through their set, so they could look them up later. Their interactions with the crowd showed that the band loves what they do, taking a fan’s BeReal and talking about a bracelet a fan had given them that said “Gracie”, which was then followed by their song ‘Gracie’. They also took their time meeting fans at the merch table after the show. Their 30-minute set impressed everyone, and their soft indie folk got the crowd in the right mood for Tiny Habits.
At about 8:30, Tiny Habits started their set with ‘Circling’, a then-unreleased song that’s also the opening track of their debut album, All for Something, released on May 24th. After an emotional cover of Billie Eilish’ ‘What Was I Made For? (From The Motion Picture “Barbie”)’ they announced they’d be playing a song written by each of the members individually: ‘Broken’ by Maya, ‘Malleable’ by Cinya and ‘Planting Flowers’ by Judah. Their beautiful harmonies and soft tunes had the audience swaying along but that didn’t stop them from singing some danceable songs as well, like the unreleased ‘People Always Change’.
Before covering ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane they announced that it was “time to dance”, and the crowd did just that. Everyone danced, waving their hands and singing along, to the point that the band mentioned how they felt like there must be something in the European air, because everyone was so “on it” singing along to that song. They also took some time to introduce their band and talk about how much they love each of them, as well as showing appreciation to their support band of the evening: Shallow Alcove.
Before singing their song ‘hemenway’, which refers to Boston, the band talked about how they’re from Boston and all met in college, as well as how lucky they feel that they get to make music and tour with their best friends. It was obvious during the entire show how much fun the band has together on stage, and the audience could feel this and have just as much fun watching them. All in all, it was a successful evening, filled with both released and unreleased songs that ranged from very emotional to fun and danceable, all conveyed with beautiful harmonies and a lot of love for music.
