Live Review: Turnover in Amsterdam

While it is officially still summer, the weather decided to give us some pouring rain right before the doors to the Melkweg in Amsterdam opened. On this rainy evening on August 29th, Turnover celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their album Peripheral Vision.

Only half an hour after doors, it was time for support act Glixen to take to the stage. Because of the sudden change in weather, people were slowly trickling into the venue. At the start of their set, the venue was still quite empty, but slowly and steadily the room filled up throughout their songs. Glixen consists of vocalist/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie, bassist Sonia Garcia, guitarist Esteban Santana and drummer Keire Johnson. The stage was barely lit, with only some lights from the back of the stage. The silhouettes of the members were seen, with the drummer set up on the right side of the stage. For the song ‘lick the star’, vocalist Aislinn Ritchie put away her guitar. The band did not talk much during their set, but made the crowd vibe along to their shoegaze sound.

Just half an hour after Glixen ended, Turnover walked out on stage. Right from the beginning notes of ‘Cutting My Fingers Off’, people were dancing along to the music. For this 10-year anniversary, the band would play the Peripheral Vision album in full and in order. The crowd really started singing along during ‘Hello Euphoria’. Some modest mosh pits were also starting to get going, especially during ‘Take My Hand’.

The band really appreciated seeing how many people care about this record, telling the crowd it means the world to them that everyone came to celebrate this anniversary with them. Unfortunately, the album did come to an end, with ‘Intrapersonal’ rounding up this part of the setlist. The crowd once again happily clapped along to the song.

Luckily for us, the concert wasn’t over yet, and the crowd got treated to 7 more songs. The first two were new songs the band has been working on, and from the reactions of the crowd, they seemed to like what they were hearing. This was Turnover’s first time back in the Netherlands since COVID, which is the longest time they have gone without coming here since the first show back in 2013.

“This is a love song” is how Austin introduced the song ‘Super Natural’. During this song, the first crowd surfer of the evening made his way into the hands of the fans. The last song of the evening was a very old one, ‘Most of the Time’, which came out in 2013. The crowd saved some energy specifically for this one, getting up all the crowdsurfers and dancing and moshing away one last time this evening. The band really picked the best song to close their set with, leaving everyone feeling happy and satisfied.
