Austrians always seem to be giving their warmest welcomes to Australians—perhaps it’s something to do with the similarities in the countries’ names? Well, the same hospitality was shown to Yours Truly when they performed at Arena in Vienna on Tuesday, September 3rd, as part of their ‘Toxic’ tour.
They brought the German band Letters Sent Home with them as their support. Despite the sweltering 34°C heat outside and the even higher temperatures inside (with no air-conditioning to cool things down), they gave their all to set the mood for the evening. Robin Werner, the guitarist, was constantly spinning around on stage. When he and bassist Lara Ripke had a small break, they took the time to play a quick game of rock-papers-scissors on stage, with Lara winning. For their final song, Werner even jumped down into the crowd to heat up the mosh pit. The entire room was jumping up and down and bouncing their heads. What a great warm up!
Right on time, Yours Truly took the stage, with vocalist Mikaila Delgado coming out with a big smile on her face. They started their set with one of their most recent singles, ‘Back 2 You,’ from their latest album Toxic. ‘California Sober’ from that same album followed, but fans of their older music soon got their money’s worth as well, as they got treated to the songs ‘High Hopes’ and ‘Circles.’ One aspect of the show that stuck out was the energy of drummer Henry Beard—he went totally crazy! It was clear that he was having a blast, and watching him perform was a joy. Mikaila herself looked very pleased with the crowd, getting them all to sing along, jump, dance and let loose. She also interacted a lot with the fans, asking the crowd a couple of questions about Austria and giving a shoutout to two fans who flew all the way from America to see the concert.
The band certainly proved themselves to be great live performers. Their set came to an end with ‘Call My Name,’ another single from their latest album. However, the only downside was that their show lasted just under 50 minutes—barely longer than their support act. The band has plenty more songs that deserve to be played live, so a longer set would have been appreciated.
After the show, fans had the opportunity to meet both bands, buy merch, get that merch signed, and chat with the members. They were all incredibly sweet, and I’m looking forward to catching another, hopefully longer, concert when Yours Truly returns to Austria.
