Spotlight: SkyeChristy

L.A. — the city where the big names are born and dreams come true. In the midst of the glittering hustle and bustle, two siblings have grown up whose shared love of music has formed a bond that transcends sisterhood and transformed them into an aspiring and promising singer-songwriter duo. We’re talking about Sophie and Georgia Edwards, aka SkyeChristy.

As the children of two highly successful songwriters and producers, they were introduced to music at an early age. Innately gifted, they made their first musical forays in the school choir, where they had the privilege of performing at New York’s renowned Carnegie Hall.

Nonetheless, given their early exposure to the music industry and its associated pressures, they initially opted against pursuing a musical career. However, fortunately for us, things turned out differently. As Georgia explained on social media, even if you try to suppress something you love, it will eventually catch up with you and you will have to pursue it.

Singing together during road trips through the neighbourhoods and hills of L.A. and letting their unique voices blend in harmonies — this not only turned the sisters into bandmates, but also best friends. Eventually, they realised that their talent and similar musical tastes united them, and they began to create music together. The foundations for a promising career were laid. It is precisely this sisterly bond that makes SkyeChristy so unique, weaves them so closely together, and helps them during their songwriting process. Together, they can be ruthlessly honest, reveal their emotions and thoughts completely unfiltered and thus process their true selves in all their vulnerability and genuineness in their music. Additionally, they can also criticise each other openly and honestly while doing so.

The results are authentic tunes that reflect both sisters perfectly. Their sound? A mixture of artists whose melodies they grew up with and music they listened to during their road trips, especially during the formative time of quarantine during the Corona pandemic. Artists such as Lana Del Rey, Joni Mitchell, Phoebe Bridgers, Billie Eilish and Mac Miller merge with music by the Eagles, Crosby, and Stills & Nash. Together, they create the distinctive SkyeChristy sound, which they themselves refer to as spooky canyon pop. This is reflected in the unmistakable and goosebump-inducing harmonies of the soft yet powerful voices. All of their songs possess a slightly mystical, dreamlike, almost ghostly soundscape, resulting in a distinctive image that stands on its own. Moreover, the lyrics are filled with pictures that inspire reflection and interpretation. Hidden within them are strong, hopeful messages.

The sisters express their personal narratives through their music, revealing a highly vulnerable aspect. Whether it is heartbreak, self-love, or a toxic environment, these are all topics that their audience can relate to. Issues that the listeners understand and may even have experienced themselves. Sophie and Georgia find a way to beautifully capture what is on the minds and hearts of many of their generation and express it with their almost magical, unmistakable sound. According to the comments section on their social networks, this is precisely what their fans love about the dynamic sister duo — their authenticity and ability to create incredible works of art from real, unadorned stories. Their most successful song to date, ‘I’m Not Like Alice,’ with just over 6.5 million streams on Spotify, is the best example of this. Inspired by the sisters‘ personal experiences, the song can be seen as a universal reminder of the importance of recognising and breaking toxic patterns of behaviour in relationships. As such, it not only convinces with a catchy and addictive soundscape, but also with a context that can be understood and empathised with by many.

Social media has certainly played a not insignificant role in their success. The duo, whose band name is made up of the sisters’ middle names, regularly use snippets and short videos on TikTok to promote their upcoming releases and give their around 145,000 followers a glimpse behind the scenes of SkyeChristy. They are authentic and down-to-earth, just like normal young and self-confident women their age, which makes them very relatable and creates a good connection with their fan base.

Since commencing their musical journey, the sisters have not only performed live in the United States and the United Kingdom, but they have also released several songs and an EP titled The Summer I Lost my Lover.
