Song review: ‘Aperture’ by Harry Styles

Harry Styles is back! After almost 1300 days, or 3,5 years, with no new music, Harry Styles released the first single from his fourth album on January 23rd. The title ‘Aperture’ raises questions about its meaning. Cambridge dictionary defines it as “an opening or hole through which light passes”. That’s exactly what the song does: it builds up over time, like a hole through which light passes.

The song feels calm, reflective, and powerful all at once. Instead of going for an instant pop hit, the song takes its time to build a mood. The sound leans more toward electronic and dance-influenced pop, but it stays soft and controlled rather than loud or flashy. It’s a track that pulls you in slowly and works best when you let it play without distractions.

Synthesizers and a steady electronic beat lead the production. This creates a spacious feeling, while the bass keeps the song moving at a relaxed pace. There aren’t many traditional instruments like guitars or drums in the foreground, which gives the song a modern, slightly dreamy edge. Overall, the song feels polished and layered, but not really overwhelming.

Harry’s voice is gentle and restrained throughout the song. He doesn’t push for big vocal moments, choosing instead a softer delivery that blends into the music. At times, his vocals sound slightly filtered or echoed, which adds to the song’s distant, almost floating feeling. This approach makes the song feel intimate, as if you’re inside his thoughts. Through his lyrics, he focuses more on emotions and moments of vulnerability, connection, and the fear and comfort that come with love. These are moments and topics that resonate with many people, so the song leaves space for listeners to relate to the lyrics in their own way.

Overall, ‘Aperture’ is a thoughtful, atmospheric song that shows Harry Styles exploring a more experimental sound. It may not be an instant sing-along, but it grows stronger with each listen. It’s an interesting preview for his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, which drops on March 6th. Accompanying this new album, Harry Styles will also go back on tour this year.
