Progressive metalcore Canadian band Spiritbox just released a very heavy, sonically gorgeous song which will have you hooked. Teasing their upcoming new EP The Fear of Fear, the song drops heaviness and interesting sonorous elements as well as beautifully written lyrics, so let’s dig into it.
Mid-october calls for spooky, and in their own way, Spiritbox managed to tease us with their own anxiety-inducing tunes. Throughout the song, you can sense a feeling of lurking fear and unease. There’s also hidden analogies to a moist, dark, uncomfortable cellar one could find themselves stuck in as if they were the protagonist of a horror movie. Pushing the door to your basement, you’ll enter the song with a creak to be met with heavy drums and guitars accompanying harsh vocals perfected by frontwoman Courtney Laplante. Instantly, you drown under an ecstatic rhythm, adding to the sentiment of panic.
Rotative, mystical synths in the background mix with ambient guitars and the vocals communicate with heavy bass and chords. The song is exhilarating, fast-paced, and heavy from start to finish. A lot of elements mimic running up a flight of stairs, away from danger, and as the lyrics imply, trying to get out of the cellar that is one’s mind.
“I turn the key into my burial. A cellar door into my open soul.”
The mind can feel like a very dark unwelcoming place, like a room you’d like to keep yourself closed in; you’re feeling things on the inside while simultaneously trying to live on the outside.
“My lungs are full of the pain of feeling. I can’t live in this world while I breathe in another one.”
As you reach the end, the song fades into the next already released single on the EP, Jaded, leaving you with the need to hear more.
The Fear of Fear is expected to come out November 3rd, so stay tuned for more music.
