Block of Flats is yet again back with their explosive single ‘Lake of Fears’. After their last single ‘Dead Inside’, the Finland-based band from Porvoo offers us another melodic and catchy song you will not get enough of.
The ambiance is set as soon as it starts. Sonar-like sounds mixed with muted guitars and a filtered voice announce the colors of the single. It’s also a nice allusion to the lyrics and the title of the song; it sounds as if one is underwater.
Drums and a strong bass-line lead you right into the musical itch that is the chorus. It is grand, almost orchestral, explosive and melodious with layers of voice and what seems to be violins.
“I’m stuck in here with my sins and I’m drowning into the lake of the fears”
The bridge is a very interesting part of the song. One that you do not expect when you dive in (no puns intended). Guitar solos, a nice pinch harmonic, and most importantly an anti-breakdown (no spoilers though), which surprisingly doesn’t disappoint and throws you back into the last chorus.
The lyrics to the song are quite metaphorical but still very straight-forward. Being overwhelmed by anxiety and insecurities feels a lot like drowning, as if all of those negative feelings are the waters you’re swimming in, emotions filling your lungs as you sink.
“I won’t survive, can’t hold the line”
