Song Review: ‘Not Quite Gone’ by Alfie Jukes

Brighton-based singer-songwriter Alfie Jukes has released a new song: ‘Not Quite Gone’. The 21-year-old just got off the road again after being on tour with Only The Poets for a few weeks, where he was able to gain a lot of new fans (including your writer).

After a quiet count-in, the song starts with Alfie vocalising beautifully as we hear drums and bass in the background. The combination of the vocals and the instrumentals immediately sets the right mood for this song for the listener.

The first verse talks about seeing a past lover for the first time again on a night out: “I see my life flash from the back of the room. You’ve got a new girl and some edgier shoes.”

Continuing the storyline in the chorus, Jukes sings about the experience of hearing a song that once held great significance in a relationship, and being reminded of this certain someone because of the song. After a breakup, listening to this song can set one back to all of the moments experienced with this person, evoking feelings of sadness and heartbreak. “I used to love this song, but now it just feels wrong.”

Still holding onto the theme of a night out, the lyrics “I won’t even try dance without you” once again give us a clear vision of what the song is about. Proceeding with some very genuine lyrics, Jukes continues to sing: “I don’t want you thinking I’m all caught up and hurt, And so I pretend like I don’t know the words.”

Even though ‘Not Quite Gone’ is lyrically not exactly a happy song, the beat of it can make the listener feel ready to dance, and sound-wise it comes across as quite cheerful.

After setting the tone with ‘Not Quite Gone’ and ‘Eyes Wide’, Alfie Jukes is set to release his second EP, Sitting Pretty, on April 5th. In the meantime, you can check out the music video for his brand-new song here.
