Song Review: ‘The Golden Years’ by Joshua Bassett

It’s not uncommon for an artist to share and tease multiple months before releasing a song.

For Joshua Bassett, the process is, just like his music, more minimalistic. Only two weeks ago, Bassett teased a snippet of ‘The Golden Years’ on social media. Now, since May 17th, the song is out in the open.

‘The Golden Years’ opens with a faded harmony, immediately giving a nostalgic vibe. It feels like some kind of relief: we’re letting go of things, welcome to the new world, though the lyrics of the song balance this out. If you listen to the melody, it feels like a warm spring night: comforting and hopeful. Listening to the lyrics, you realize the layers the song has and the hurt and sentiment Bassett experiences. Because besides being a singer, Bassett knows how to truly tell a story.

Bassett has a very sensitive and nostalgic personality that is also portrayed in his other songs like ‘LA’ and ‘Only a Matter of Time’. In ‘The Golden Years’ he reminisces about pivotal moments in his past relationship. He has a very reflective way of songwriting. He sings about the good times, but also acknowledges his own flaws which led to the break-up.

Voice-wise, Bassett has an amazing range. This shows mostly in the bridge of the song, which is difficult for a male voice. He is very aware of what he is capable of and therefore makes nice switches in height during the song.

‘The Golden Years’ is a perfect song for feeling nostalgic without feeling too sad. Bassett’s voice is pleasant to listen to and he knows how to carry this story.
