Song Review: ‘Silly Crush’ by Eileen Alister

On October 25th, Swiss singer-songwriter Eileen Alister released her new track ‘Silly Crush’ and with it continues her streak of fun, energetic pop songs that are nothing but pure hit potential.

Right away, it becomes clear that one of the song’s biggest strengths is its catchy beat. Rest assured, it will linger on your mind all day long and so will the lyrics – while seemingly simplistic at first, they actually have several layers to them on closer listen. The lyrics point out the double standards women have to face in the dating world, while also serving as a self-ironic take on making poor choices in men. To sum it up, the song is a sharp commentary on society with plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments.

And one thing’s for sure, Alister is not holding back. With straight-forward lyrics such as ‘You kiss my skin, then break my neck / Strip down to my underwear / The only time you ever care’, the song gives off the kind of unhinged energy that will make live audiences go crazy.

Throughout the song, both the drums and the electric guitar are prominently featured, infusing the track with some fun pop-punk elements. To put it simply, if Olivia Rodrigo and 2011-era Avril Lavigne were to collaborate, ‘Silly Crush’ would be the outcome.

Apart from delivering an amazing song, Alister seems to have taken a masterclass in marketing as she continuously heightened the anticipation for the song over the span of several weeks. Additionally, she’s following a clear vision as far as aesthetics are concerned. Although the visuals for her different releases are all distinct, they all follow a theme – a stunning one at that!

‘Silly Crush’ is a great example of witty songwriting and the last lyric makes for the perfect punchline: ‘It’s brutal and it’s tough / DIY cause I’ve had enough’. A worthy ending to an amazing song!
