Song Review: ‘Can u?’ by Sweet Maxime

On October 27th, Sweet Maxime released her new song ‘Can u?’. This is the third release from this young London-based singer-songwriter, whose songs and lyrics are centred around “exploring themes of coming of age, womanhood, and the absurdity of life.” The new track fits exactly within this description too: ‘Can u?’ is about the difficulties young women may feel when trying to communicate their sexual desires.

The song starts off slow and mellow, giving the listener a feeling of waking up in the morning to soft sunlight. Sweet Maxime’s soft vocals match this vibe perfectly. As the track goes into the chorus, she shows off her incredible range by going into higher notes. The song alternates between the mellow tones and vocals of the start and the high notes of the chorus, making it a beautiful song that the listener can completely lose themselves in. Sweet Maxime was able to capture the emotions and subject of the song perfectly in her music video, in which we can see her in sunny fields, looking in a mirror and applying make-up, showing parts of the vulnerability in desire that the song aimed to address.
