EP Review: ‘MOTION SICKNESS’ by Oliver Keane

Just released on November 15th, MOTION SICKNESS, the new EP by Oliver Keane that you simply can’t miss!

This release is the result of three years of hard work, during which the artist has delved into his own experiences, emotions, and relationships, culminating in a beautiful project of five songs.

The first track, which gives the EP its title, immerses you in Oliver Keane’s world and atmosphere. It begins with a voicemail message in which someone encourages him, acknowledging that he’s feeling unwell, and promises to talk soon. Following this, the sound takes on a melancholic tone, and the artist’s voice resonates with sadness: “I’m tired of change, I’m homesick lying on the floor again”. It transports listeners to the moment he moved to London to pursue his dreams.

‘ROMEO’, released last August, is the second track of the project. Its energetic drums and guitar instantly transport you to a live show. It’s the quintessential carefree young love anthem, the kind of track that gets the entire crowd jumping. Next comes ‘GIVE ME A REASON’, a song heavily influenced by British soft indie, tackling love through the lens of fear of commitment. As the artist explains, this fear is “part of the feeling” of falling in love.

‘M24’ moves away from the excitement of starting a relationship and transitions to its end, maintaining a melancholic ambiance, accompanied by acoustic guitar. There’s a certain undertone reflecting how, despite time passing since the breakup, both parties still harbor feelings about what happened. About the song, Oliver Keane explains: “’M24’ is about my first girlfriend, who I had quite a messy breakup with, and I think we both held resentment towards one another. In reality, we didn’t work because we were both ‘cut by the same blade’ and struggled with our emotions. It’s finding the irony in the fact we hated each other for something we had in common.”

The EP closes with ‘HEY’, which alternates a gentle melody with a powerful, guitar-filled chorus, conveying the anger of realizing he didn’t receive the love he deserved. As the artist puts it: “It’s a toxic song about hating my exes,” but it goes deeper than that. He adds, “I just wanted to channel all my anger towards people who treated me badly into one song, as I’d never really written about anger before. I see it as a toxic emotion.”

MOTION SICKNESS is a short but impressive journey through the emotions of a young artist who is not only launching his career but also beginning to navigate adulthood, relationships, and the challenges that come with them. It makes his message deeply relatable, paired with musical quality that only improves with every release.

Check out the dates of his upcoming concerts and stay tuned for future updates. Oliver Keane doesn’t often headline shows, and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!
