EP Review: ‘Through The Window’ by Calum Bowie

On March 21st Calum Bowie released his debut EP Through The Window and it’s yet another masterpiece. Bowie takes us on his journey of growing as an artist and finding his way over the years.

The 5-track EP starts off with ‘Dream Of My Own’, a beautiful song about working towards and fulfilling your dreams and also his first single from the record. The song is based around Calum’s signature guitar track paired with strings and his beautiful vocals. If you want to read a more detailed review on this song on our page, we had the pleasure of reviewing it when it was released back in January. You can find it here.

The second song is called ‘Take Me Home’. It talks about being on the road and after a while finally being back, but also wanting to go back home. “So take me home, catch a train in Central Station, let me wash my dirty clothes”. It’s a beautiful little love letter to one’s home and despite how life can rush past you, being home feels like a comfort when the rest of life catches up with you. The bridge emphasizes that feeling of being able to recharge while being at home “I was running out of battery, I was running out of luck. […]”.

The third song ‘Wherever She Goes’ is the second single of the record. It’s a bit more upbeat than the rest of the record with a more pronounced drum track than his other songs. Lyric wise Calum sings about how the world seems to always turn so fast and how time seems to fly by making everything seem uncertain. Everything but her, or your significant other “I know I need to slow down, take time, everybody’s online, free fall non stop I’m just tryna keep up. […] The only thing that I believe, is she.” He sings “And when she looks at me I know that I’ve arrived. It feels like home, wherever she goes”, which summarises the feeling of belonging when you find your significant other perfectly.

Song number four called ‘Stay A While’ is perfectly fitting for the theme of the EP. The song describes wanting to stay where you feel at home and not wanting to rush the time spent there “I wanna stay a while, I wanna take all night”, especially after having been away for a while “I’ve been away for seven weeks […]”. It’s another little love letter to your person and how that alone can be one’s home “[…] breathing you in, taking my time to memorize your skin”, while feeling the support to reach your dreams “I hate when you say go follow your dreams, cause i know what that means”.

‘Your Anthem’ finishes the EP off. It’s a re-recorded song that was first released back in January 2018 (‘Anthem’). And as cheesy as it sounds, it really does feel like the perfect anthem for any music lover. It’s based around a guitar track and feels almost nostalgic. Bowie sings “And when the right song comes at the right time, it becomes your anthem” while listing off fond memories of his “We looked up into the sky to see a shooting star” / “Staying out all night until the sun comes round” in the verses. For this new version he also added a bridge, back vocals and changed up the melody of the chorus slightly.

Calum Bowie is one of the rising stars of our current music world and definitely a name you should keep in mind. Don’t forget to check out the songs and music videos and definitely give this record a listen.
