EP Review: ‘the bed i lie in’ by Chloe Star

In a music landscape currently dominated by catchy and bubbly pop anthems (that’s that me espresso!), it is brave to take a different path when releasing your debut EP or album. Chloe Star has proved that she is not afraid to stand out and make her music entirely her own. Chloe’s debut EP the bed i lie in is a collection of songs full of raw energy and rebellious spirit, crafting her own genre by combining elements of pop, rock, and punk. Each of the five tracks on the EP is full of emotion and honesty, uncovering personal topics and stories. With these songs, Chloe opens up about struggles with heartbreak, loneliness, and overcoming addiction.

“This is the most authentic collection of songs I have ever written,” says Chloe. “Being able to put my heart and soul into this project has been so healing for me on so many levels. I am officially walking in my truth and can now shut the door on the bed I lie in.”

Using heavy, distorted guitars, Chloe crafted songs with deep layers of instruments and vocals. The result is an explosive sound where anthemic choruses are backed by overdrive guitars and preceded by messy voice recordings. Chloe captures the essence of struggling with emotion with her powerful vocals and honest, unapologetic lyrics. We can already imagine these songs being performed live, where ‘before i met your mother’ is an especially danceable song that a crowd would no doubt sing along to, and ‘wasted youth’ will be one of the songs everyone will lose their voice to.

This EP is not just a collection of songs, but rather feels like a vocal manifesto for anyone who has ever struggled with negative feelings and has experienced healing from these.

Chloe Star is a Persian and Indigenous singer, songwriter and visual artist. Growing up, she split her time between Los Angeles and her family’s reservation in San Bernardino. With a childhood that was chaotic and often unstable, she found solace in journaling and writing poetry. She taught herself to play piano and guitar and soon started transforming her prose into lyrics. After spending a few years finding and cultivating her sound, Chloe made her official debut in 2023. Chloe Star is bold, evocative, openly queer and a fierce advocate for female empowerment, making her a true modern day rockstar. Her music is equally defiant as she is.

the bed i lie in is her newest release with tracks ‘said what i said on the internet’, ‘before i met your mother’, ‘after thought’, ‘hollywood kills’ and ‘wasted youth’.
