Zimmer90 (Eng. Room90) are back with a brand-new EP. On the 28th of June, the German duo released What Love Is, named after their eponymous song that was released back in December 2023. The duo, made up of Joscha and Finn, has been growing rapidly over the last year, catching listeners with their indie-electropop music. What Love Is consists of six songs, some of which were released a long time ago, and others are brand new. Despite their disparate origins, the songs fit perfectly together and give us a wonderful collection of summer music.
A lot of people have probably already heard the title track ‘What Love Is’, as it went viral on TikTok at the end of last year. It has been used by people all over the world to recap 2023 and look back on the most joyous moments of the year. Another song that has been used on countless social media videos and streamed many times already is the third track of this EP ‘Summer Rain’. The song, which is sung by Joscha with a warm and gentle voice, is truly a summer anthem.
“I’m stuck, I’m stuck again.” / “My sun has set too soon.” / “I did it for you.” Zimmer90’s previously unreleased song is lyrically outstanding. ‘For You’ is a soft yet very dancy tune, uplifting with its rhythmic sounds and funky bassline. The second brand-new song on this EP is ‘Lonely’. Despite the sad, melancholic lyrics that talk about a relationship coming to an end (“Dancing alone through the night, through it all. Feel the waves in your bones, ‘till the moment is over.”), the synth-soaked tune takes us back to the 80s. Making the listeners feel nostalgic and at the same time wanting to get up and dance, ‘Lonely’ is a true highlight of this EP and shows the wide range of Zimmer90’s musical abilities.
Going back to Zimmer90’s earlier days, ‘Drowning’ which was released back in 2021, is now a part of What Love Is. Despite being an older release, the song is an excellent addition to the EP, both lyrically and sonically. The bass-driven tune is filled with dance rhythms and upbeat sonics, evoking a nostalgic mood with lines such as “Summer is over and I’m seeing the stars in your eyes.”. Coming to the end of What Love Is, there is another song that fans of the duo have been able to listen to since last August. ‘Under the Moon’ starts off slow and soft and gradually increases its pace throughout the song. To conclude the EP in a great way, hopeful lyrics are sung (“Maybe this ain’t over, can you pull me closer?”) while “it’ll be alright” can be heard in the background repeatedly.
To round up, What Love Is fits very well into Zimmer90’s feel-good discography. A clear standout, however, is their new funky 80s track ‘Lonely’, where the duo reveals a new side of themselves.
