Small Talk has done it again! This time with their second EP, You Have To Understand I’m Young. This new project features 5 tracks, 4 of which you can already listen to on Spotify, and the mysterious ‘track 3’ which is only available on the physical copy that will be arriving at fans’ homes across Europe in the coming weeks.
As they have accustomed us to, the theme of this EP continues with the concerns surrounding all of Small Talk’s music: the difficulties of growing up, things changing, feeling very old yet very young at the same time, love, and personal development. With this brief introduction, ‘Begin Again’ kicks off as the first song and the one that gives the project its name. “You have to understand I’m young, it is no excuse but I’m still learning how to love someone.” This first track has a slightly more rock sound, but it’s also the latest they’ve released, where Small Talk’s evolution as artists is clearly noticeable. Despite maintaining their characteristic sound, they grow and surpass expectations with each release.
The second track, ‘Lost in the Moment’, speaks about facing the challenges of being in a relationship. “Going blind, can’t see the signs, I’m holding on until we subside.” The song opens by discussing the context of the situation, tangible elements that viewers can immediately visualize and thus fill these lyrics with their own familiar faces to which they can relate. The chorus is constantly repeated and is very energetic. “You can’t blame me” seamlessly connects with the theme and lyrics of the first track. There is a reflection on the listening order, creating the need to know what’s in the mysterious ‘track 3’ and what part of this narrative has not yet been told.
The next song is ‘Always Always’, which talks about the band members’ hometown, how as they grew up they moved away to go to college, and every time they came back everything was worse. The places that used to be their favorite spots were no longer the same, friends weren’t the same, and some you never see again. This song is about the feeling that your home is no longer home, and you can feel that constant deterioration over time. The vocals sound particularly emotional on this track but without letting go of the energetic sound that characterizes the band.
‘Move On’ is the track that closes You Have to Understand I’m Young and sounds very different, leaning much more towards a ballad, but without relinquishing the band’s soul for a moment. The guitar is much softer, and the melody plays with the rhythm of the drums and the vocals in a beautiful way. It’s a wonderful way to close the EP.
If you want to find out what’s behind ‘track 3’, you’ll have to buy a physical copy- if you haven’t already. If this is your first time hearing about this band, we recommend checking out our spotlight article on them. Small Talk is a talented band with a very distinctive sound who continue to work hard to make their mark, so don’t blink or you’ll miss it!
