Song Review: ‘_dec carte de noël’ by Pomme

French Singer-songwriter Claire Pommet, known as Pomme, announced a new upcoming record which is coming out in two parts titled Saisons. The first part comes out December first, but a short song named ‘_dec carte de noël’ was released on the 10th of November and we want to share Pomme’s gentle and comforting music with you.

Describing the album, the artist explains it is a contemplative object that will develop as the seasons go by and that the first part focuses on autumn and winter. ‘_dec carte de noël’ (“December Christmas card” translated in English), is exactly what the title suggests; a Christmas card written for a person who is away during these merry times. The song is sad, yet, oh so soft hearted.

It starts off jolly and delicate, a little sentimental and nostalgic, after that the sound shifts, deepening the feelings of sadness and longing to be away from one another and of remembering why the relationship ended. The song is simple, it consists of three verses and draws your attention to the lyrics, which are a key element in Pomme’s music. Her voice is accompanied by piano all throughout the song. A simple interlude of flutes breaks the unified structure and reminds you of ‘Silent night,’ the well-known Christmas tune. Just like the rest of Pomme’s discography, ‘_dec carte de noël’ sounds like a lullaby because of its overall unified monotony in structure and the artist’s tender and pleasant vocals.

Overall, this song feels like you’re cuddled up in front of the fire, wrapped-up in the gentle melody, writing a message to a lost acquaintance, a lost relationship. It definitely makes you want to hear more and teases the rest of the anticipated record. Pomme is currently touring across France and the rest of Europe for her “Consolation” tour.
