Song Review: ‘Act of Innocence’ by Picture This

Picture This have just put out their newest single ‘Act of Innocence’ and are starting the year with another masterpiece. After releasing ‘Call It Love’ in November last year, ‘Act of Innocence’ aligns perfectly with their idea of setting the sound for the new year and their album campaign for their upcoming record Parked Car Conversations, even though the release date is yet to be announced.

It is a very anthemic song that makes you want to drive down the street with your windows down and just sing your heart out. Sonically it is very clear that the song will be at its best played live in a room filled with people. As always you can picture them up on a stage when you listen to it. This record is just one of these things that gives you a ton of serotonin whenever you listen to it because of its upbeat sound and meaningful lyrics and I personally cannot wait to hear it live.

Speaking of lyrics, singer and writer Ryan Hennessy who writes most of the band’s songs mainly by himself has to be one of the most talented people in the music industry at the moment. With ‘Act of Innocence’ he tells a story about being in love, messing and making up and finding a way out of it together. The song starts off with the line “I wanna catch the butterflies you’re feeling” and goes on to list a few things he wants to be for his person and ends the verse by saying he wants to “Love you like this forevermore” which is a pretty big and very pure commitment.

In the second verse the song talks about wanting the bad parts of the person too and wanting to be there for the person (“I wanna bathe in all the tears you’re crying” / “I wanna carry all your burdens”) and goes on to tell the person that they don’t have to worry about it and to “Just let me love you like this forevermore”. With the last line “Don’t you let me, let you, let this never end. It’s some kind of act of, act of innocence.” he explains that he wants the person to never let go of their love and makes them aware of how precious and pure that love is even with all the ups and downs they might have to work through together.

In a recent email to their fans the band explained that this record means a lot to them because of the lyrics that talk about “Those moments when someone you love fills your every thought, your every action. When your love and desire for them is insatiable. But also about how these things just happen in real life all the time.”, making it a very relatable song. Listening to it just makes you want to love and want to be loved unconditionally and no matter what mood you might be in, this record will make you love life and your people in it a little bit more again.

The day of the release the band also dropped their fully choreographed music video which is a beautiful representation of the song through dance with incredibly talented people. Starting with a person cleaning a warehouse and ending in this daydream state of a whole group of dancers performing to the music, the video aligns beautifully with the sound and especially the lyrics of ‘Act of Innocence’.

In conclusion: Picture This are THE BAND when it comes to releasing your go-to serotonin boosting song and we are all in for a treat when their new album Parked Car Conversations comes out this year. If you are only now finding out about them, I would definitely recommend you go and check out their entire discography. I promise, you won’t regret it and might just find your new favorite song.
