Song Review: ‘Afterglow’ by Sam Fischer

Does the name Sam Fischer sound familiar? If not, the song ‘This City’ will surely ring a bell. The song, released in 2019, gained immense popularity. Sam even collaborated with Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, and toured with Mimi Webb and Ashe (who he went to college with, how cute is that!).

Sam is known for his calm pop songs and incredible voice. After releasing multiple songs this year, last Friday he released his newest song ‘Afterglow’. The song starts with sounds from the recording studio, counting from one to four before the music starts. The intro almost makes me think of Coldplay, which is funny considering Sam asked himself “What would Chris Martin do?” when he wrote the song. But once Sam starts singing, he immediately makes the song his own. The energy is there!

Comfort songs, like ‘Carry It Well’ and ‘Ready’, and empowering songs like ‘I Got To Live’ are his forte. ‘Afterglow’ falls into the latter category and is an oath to self love. “Laughing a little too much / I’m remembering the way that it was” describes the feeling of realising you feel better after a period of feeling sad or unhappy, while other lyrics describe the feeling of falling in love. It makes me wonder if perhaps, the song is about falling in love with yourself again after a while?

The upbeat instrumentals make you want to get up, go outside and dance on the street and the positivity in the song is contagious. I am definitely adding this song to my ‘summer throwback’ playlist, as this is going to be one of those songs that remind me of my happy summer memories when the weather gets colder and seasonal depression starts to sneak in, (am I the only one?). Once again, Sam has released a bop!
