American pop-rap duo Jack & Jack made the soundtrack to many teen girls’ lives several years ago. With songs like ‘Rise’, a collaboration with Jonas Blue, they established their spot as one of the biggest summer bangers ever. Back in 2020, the duo went on a hiatus after releasing their debut album A Good Friend Is Nice. Fortunately for their fans, the duo started releasing new music again about two years later. Since then, they have released their second album Home and gone on tour for the first time in years. On the 18th of April, the duo released their latest single ‘baby blue’.

The track starts with a synth beat that immediately gives off a very melancholic vibe. The drums kick in about ten seconds later, joined by Jack Johnson’s vocals. From the first verse it’s clear that this track is reminiscent of a relationship that once was, but no longer is, as Johnson sings how he feels “like I don’t know you at all”. In the pre-chorus, he speaks about his ex’ “baby blue, bloodshot eyes,” which is where the title of the track comes in. Right after, he mentions the bittersweet ending of their relationship.
In the following chorus, Johnson’s vocals are joined by Jack Gilinsky’s. The song’s tempo does not change much throughout the song – it’s almost a continuous rhythm that mostly gives impact to the lyrics. In the chorus, Gilinsky sings how the ex-lover “wants [to] talk about love like you even know what that shit is”. Somewhere along the road, things definitely turned bitter between him and his partner. The track follows the same lyrics, almost throughout, making the song possibly a little repetitive, but at the same time easy to listen to. It is a very modern, lo-fi track that is the perfect backing track to a dewy spring morning. What makes it work even more is how easy it is to hear the emotion in their voices. It’s a short track that can easily be put on loop, because it’s simply comforting to listen to, especially when going through a break-up.
