Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions and sounds with TEYA’s newest release ‘Behind The Scenes’, because safe to say that no matter what your expectations are beforehand, this song will exceed them.
The track boasts an abundance of vastly different musical elements that are all used at the right places and aid the storytelling perfectly.
It starts with a hypnotising intro that showcases TEYA’s angelic voice and sounds like the opening song to wonderland or, in this case, TEYA’s own version of the Truman Show. With the line “So settle in and let the Truman Show begin”, she sends the listeners off to her chaotic world. The soft notes from the intro are nowhere to be heard as a strong beat takes over and TEYA starts listing the things she does, feels, or experiences that she doesn’t usually share with the audience.
In the first verse and the chorus, the Austrian-Serbian artist who recently moved to Berlin describes an experience that seemingly every twenty-something year old has to go through: ignoring piles of dirty laundry, being broke, feeling homesick, and battling insecurities, to name a few. While certain lines may make you laugh, others hit close to home, probably closer than most people would care to admit – but TEYA does, and her candour is what makes this song so special. There’s no euphemism, just the truth, including the less aesthetic parts such as mouldy freezers and nose-picking. The second verse, in which TEYA explains why exactly she keeps these things behind the scenes, is just as relatable.
As far as the catchy beat, the witty lyrics and the abrupt changes of pace are concerned, the song is reminiscent of ‘Who The Hell Is Edgar?’, TEYA’s iconic duet with Salena which sent them to the Eurovision Song Contest last year and landed the duo a spot as fan favourites. However, despite these similarities, ‘Behind The Scenes’ is a unique song that further increases the anticipation for TEYA’s upcoming EP.
Once again, TEYA proved that she’s marching to the beat of her own drum; she transcends musical borders, and ‘Behind The Scenes’ is no exception. The song cannot be limited to a genre or style, and it may even be described as bizarre – but that is exactly its strength.
