Song Review: ‘Break You’ by Trash Boat

“I wanna break the silence” is how British rock band Trash Boat teased their newest single less than a week before its release. The band consists of lead vocalist Tobi Duncan, guitarists Dann Bostock and Ryan Hyslop, bassist James Grayson and drummer Oakley Moffatt. Approximately five months after the release of ‘Liar Liar’, the five-piece released ‘Break You’ on the 18th of April.

The track, which is slightly more than two minutes long, opens with the guitar that is being strummed at high speed. “Here we go again,” Duncan opens the song, before the drums slowly kick in halfway through the first verse, becoming a lot louder and heavier when this lyric gets repeated. While the first few lyrics make use of clean vocals, Duncan’s vocals become distorted when belting out the second verse.

The first chorus is clean once again and starts with the line the song was teased with. “I wanna break you down,” Duncan sings. The track is about the intense anxiety he has been dealing with, which has been eating at him without him knowing where it has come from. In the third verse, he states that he feels like “everything inside is against me”. Irrational fear has made him afraid of everything for seemingly no reason. What makes this feeling shine through especially well is not just the way Duncan grunts the lyrics, but also the nerve-wracking guitar riff and intense drums. A lot of people can surely relate to the idea of feeling too afraid to even leave the house, fearing that any day could be the last. At a mere 2 minutes and 19 seconds, it is easy to put this song on constant repeat. Fortunately, Duncan has stated that he has made it through this anxious period – and any listeners who are feeling like this right now may know that they are never alone in this fight.

At the moment, Trash Boat is not planning to release an album, but they did say last year they will continue to write and release singles “piece by piece” which might eventually have these separate singles being turned into one project. ‘Break You’ is a promising piece of music, immediately loved by fans, who surely cannot wait to hear what will be next.
