On July 26th, Zach Herron, a former member of boyband Why Don’t We, released his debut single ‘caroline’. The track is a classic summer pop song, with very high-energy vibes, and is about what feels like a carefree teenage romance. The song starts off soft, with Herron’s voice seemingly coming out of a radio, setting the scene for a crisp summer day. The lyrics immediately emphasise this setting: “Brown eyes and that heart of gold, the kind of girl that you wanna know. She’s in my head everywhere I go, just like a song on the radio.”
After this short first verse, the song starts picking up speed in the pre-chorus, giving the exciting sense of rushing to meet your crush. “And like a teenage dream, she smiled at me, and said, ‘Don’t go breaking my heart’” Herron sings, the classic lyric he used to tease the song in the months building up to the release of ‘caroline’.
Then, in the chorus, the song explodes into a high-energy party vibe: “Her kiss tastes like summer nights, summer nights, take me to paradise, paradise. She talks sweet like Caroline, Caroline, all night long.” With dreamy lyrics like these, Herron charms his listeners. Throughout the song, the listener is easily pulled into memories of summer nights combined with young love, making ‘caroline’ the perfect summer jam for pop music enjoyers.
