NIEK is an indie pop singer-songwriter from the Netherlands. He has been making his own music for a couple of years now, having released his first song in 2020 and his debut album what are you up to? in 2022. Next to making his own music, he is also a talented busker, earning the likes of people all over the world. NIEK’s latest single ‘could it be?’ was released on the 3rd of November. We had a listen for you!
The song starts with a tranquil piano intro, followed by NIEK’s deep and calming voice. The added harmonies bring more depth to the song and elevate the listening experience. Though calm, the melody is not boring and the instrumentals are alluring, especially with the addition of more instruments in the chorus and towards the end of the song. NIEK says Coldplay’s Parachutes’ album was an inspiration for this song, and the connection is clear!
Lyrical themes in the song are letting go, finding your place in the world with and without a certain person, going your own way, and hope. Though, this is a song that is up to interpretation and therefore can be relatable in a lot of situations. The last lyric, “before I fly” feels almost symbolic, as it feels like the instruments near the end lift you up. Fun fact: this lyric is also the inspiration for the cover art of the song!
