On March 21st Mt. Joy, Los Angeles-based indie-rock band, released their new single ‘Coyote’. Its sound and lyrics aim to “capture their vibe” and offer a unique perspective on the similarities between humankind and coyotes.
The first sounds of guitar strings that echo coyotes’ howling in the night set the scene at twilight, right before the “badass creatures of the sunset” come out.

Right from the opening verse — “Come on, get on the bus / There’s room for all of us” — the song establishes the feeling of togetherness, the movement towards the common goal that requires trust. Just as coyotes form bands, humans group to achieve common goals.
The chorus, with its repetitive chant “That one, that one, that one, my one” serves as both a catchy hook and a subtle celebration of individuality within unity. The build-up through the chorus only intensifies the feeling, until it reaches the lyrics “That walk underneath the blue sky / The river wanders by”, which alludes to the coyotes in the wilderness.
The second verse offers another similarity between coyotes and people — a feeling of uncertainty. The lyrics “Catch the feeling that you might get lost / Before we turn to dust” allow the listener to delve deeper into these themes, exploring themes of control and the transience of life.
The theme of togetherness becomes even more prominent towards the song’s conclusion: “Coyotes together / If we’re gonna go, better go together”. Those lyrics serve as a strong reminder of the strength of community. The repetitiveness throughout the song only plays in its favour, adding to its vibe and immersing deeper into the coyotes’ “state of mind.” The chorus and bridges towards the end set the listener in running motion with their increasing pace, just like “coyotes on the run”. Overall, the song emphasises the importance of togetherness by drawing parallels between the untamed spirit of coyotes and the human need for unity. Fans can look forward to more unique songs from the group, as they are set to release their new album, Hope We Have Fun on May 30th.
