Swedish based band Imminence put out a new single on the 17th of November, dipping us back into their emotional and dreamy sound again. There isn’t anything much more satisfying than a band releasing a song which perfectly reflects the sound of the band- and ‘Death by a Thousand Cuts’ is one of those. With explosive vocals, dreamy instrumentals and a satisfying breakdown, the single is an Imminence all-rounder.
The lyrics target a very deep topic; hoping for the emotional pain you are going through to go away, longing for someone or something to save you before death does.
“There’s no escape from the thoughts inside my head. Dark days have taken the best of me. I can’t go on like this.”
The song starts with just vocals, some ambient background instruments and a rhythmic, heartbeat-like pulsation. You are eased into the song gently, seeing it get progressively more intense until the soul-crushing chorus with its rough moving vocals hits you like a tidal wave. The bass and drums complement the guitar riffs and vocals perfectly; everything falls into place.
And what would Imminence be without the crying violins? They accompany the rest of the instrumental for the remaining of the verses, adding dimension and even more feeling.
“Death by a thousand cuts. Do you bleed for something, or will you die for nothing?”
The bridge leads to an explosive breakdown which is definitely headbang worthy and unleashes a variety of sounds and riffs.
There is something about Eddie Berg and his gorgeous vocals that elevates the level of emotion in every song the band releases and it’s, of course, something you’ll find in ‘Death by a Thousand Cuts.’ Additionally, the structure of the single feels like being on a roller coaster, going from gentle to rough, sung sadness to screamed despair, continuously keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Imminence is starting a North American tour on the 26th of November with Until I Wake. Grab tickets here!
