Song Review: ‘Every God I Pray To’ by Only The Poets

If you’re a fan of Only The Poets, chances are you’ve heard them play ‘Every God I Pray To’ during their last tour. In fact, this song was a special moment in the show, as the band played it acoustically in the middle of the concert crowd, without any microphones. As of the 10th of November, the song has officially been released and fans can reminisce about the live shows. Not a fan yet? Do not fret – we had a listen for you!

The ballad starts with lead singer Tommy’s smooth voice and a calm piano melody. The combination of the singer’s voice and the instrumentals pull you into the song and guide you through it fluidly. The simplicity of only the piano and a single voice does not mean the song is lacking any depth – on the contrary, this song perfectly shows the breadth of Only The Poets’ repertoire. The band is perfectly capable of writing a simple, emotional ballad with fitting instrumentals as well as up-beat rocky songs with heavy guitar instrumentals.

On the meaning of the song, the band explains: “[we] wrote this to delve into the idea that no matter how much you attempt to move forward and seek solace elsewhere, you inevitably find yourself returning to that same person”, a theme that was explored earlier in their song ‘Looking At You’. Though if we were to put the two songs on a storytelling timeline, ‘Every God I Pray To’ would precede ‘Looking At You’.

The lyrics highlight insecurity about a relationship and about your own behavior towards the other person, when both are going through a rough patch. Though you know things are not going smoothly, you can’t help but be pulled back to this person.

‘Every God I Pray To’ is a great addition to Only The Poets’ ever-expanding discography and will inevitably bring back memories from their latest shows as well as make new listeners curious about their other music.
