Song Review: ‘Heart-Shaped Soul’ by Loveless

After announcing their new album in a gig video, the fairly young American alternative rock duo Loveless, consisting of Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail, released a brand new song called ‘Heart-Shaped Soul’, and Melomaniacs Magazine is ready to review it for you.

On the count of three, you are propelled into a rhythm that instantly sticks to you. As the first verse kicks in, it’s hard not to notice Julian Comeau’s vocals playing on the scale perfectly.

After a very short pre-chorus, you jump straight into the good stuff: Loveless’ habitual earworm chorus with a sort of raspiness and nice display of vocal qualities. The perfect mix of electric guitars and simple yet articulated drums help you to get into the single’s energy. The lyrics mention the will to leave a relationship, yet not truly being able to. “I let you know that I’d let you down, but you still, you still stick around.”

The second verse offers changes in the vocal delivery, which makes it especially interesting and fun to listen to. “Let’s cut it off before we drown. My heart-shaped soul bleeds on the ground.”

The intriguing melody from the intro comes back and then, the chorus kicks in one last time just to make sure you have it engraved in your head for the next couple of days. The guitars feel like they are sticking-out some more and they are accompanied by beautiful vocal runs that will definitely make you want to listen again.

In short, it’s on point, it’s gorgeous, and it’s most definitely Loveless.

The duo’s new album Loveless II comes out September 13th and you can watch the music video for ‘Heart-Shaped Soul’ here.
