When you’re talking about your favourite queer pop girls, make sure to include Milune in the conversation. With her new track ‘Hearts Lust’, which came out on November 1st, she once again claims her spot on the artists-to-watch list.
Her past releases have proven that Milune knows how to pen down sad heartbreak songs; with ‘Hearts Lust’, she now goes into a different direction. In the past couple of weeks, the singer-songwriter had already been teasing the track by posting its bridge, which gets stuck in your head immediately, making you yearn for the song in the same way that Milune is yearning in the song.
There’s such a light-heartedness in the way Milune describes the longing for her girlfriend, the lyrics are playful and pure. “Angel dust, hearts lust” is the perfect hook, summing up the juxtaposition of the innocent sounding tune and the lyrics which are anything but innocent. The sound effects in the background, such as her little laughs and giggles, round the song off so well and add a nice touch of excitement.
Something Milune has mastered in her art is a temporal ambivalence, meaning that her music sounds like it could’ve been made at any point in time between the eighties and now. Simply put, it’s timeless. For one, the synths give the song a certain retro quality, especially in its beginning. And secondly, below the surface of almost all her songs lies a rose-tinted nostalgia, sometimes between the lines of her lyrics, sometimes in the melody.
While her debut EP, which came out in June, had a bit of a darker, more mysterious theme, she’s now colouring her sound cotton pink. Complimented by her angelic voice, Milunes music can be best described as soft, dreamy pop that always has a beautiful tenderness to it.
If the song has left you wanting for more, you’re in luck: With the release of ‘Hearts Lust’, Milune announced her debut album, which is also titled Hearts Lust and will come out on March 7th.
