Song Review: ‘Hollow Heart’ by Internet Tears

Featuring Daniel Louis (vocals), Zack Apuzzo (drums), and Esteban Rivera (bass guitar), Internet Tears have established themselves as a new force in the indie pop scene, blending colourful tints of pop-rock, synth-punk and synthwave in their encapsulating songs that explore themes such as self-empowerment and relationships.

The Connecticut-based band has already made a name for itself in the New York Tri-State area, but they are bound to break out to a much wider audience as they continue to release catchier and catchier tracks.

Their latest single ‘Hollow Heart’ continues to captivate their listeners. Following the introspective ‘Death & His Friends’, this release ventures deeper into themes of emotional vulnerability and the complexities of modern relationships.

The song showcases the band’s unmistakable blend of ’80s and ’90s pop-rock, synth-punk, and synthwave influences. The song features shimmering synths, a driven rhythm, and Daniel Louis’s emotive vocals, creating a nostalgic yet modern sound. The track’s production is polished, yet it loses nothing of its indie authenticity, which the listeners are used to. Their original sound comes from singer Dan’s past experiences in a progressive rock band, incorporating all the sounds and styles he’s experimented with. The singer wrote and produced the entire track on his own.

The lyrics of ‘Hollow Heart’ talk about a relationship’s emotional aftermath – feelings of emptiness and longing. Louis’s introspective songwriting brings the nuances of heartbreak and self-reflection to life, opening listeners up to a poignant narrative that’s both personal and relatable.

Much of their inspiration comes from film and cinematography, which explains their specific aesthetics and how they portray their visuals. They cite Neon Trees and The 1975 as influences for their glowing yet sharp sound, and it shows through their production and instrumentation. Even with their multiple influences, the band captures a sound all their own. Their sound is an explosive yet laid-back mix, allowing the passionate lyrics to blend nicely alongside the synthy instrumental. The instrumentals and the lyrics go hand in hand on this one, and it is impressive when a single can walk the line of a strong production and strong lyricism. The drums, bass, keys, and vocals all complement each other in a way that only a really strong track can.

With ‘Hollow Heart’, Internet Tears further solidifies their place in the indie pop scene. The track’s blend of nostalgic influences and contemporary sensibilities makes it a standout release on their growing discography. Fans of broody pop music will take a liking to this track.
