I recently had the amazing opportunity to check out Connecticut based, rising indie pop band Internet Tears and their new single ‘I Want You’. Comprising of Daniel Louis (vocals), Zack Apuzzo (drums), Esteban Rivera (bass guitar), and Chris “Leap Frog Jones” Strachan (lead guitar), the band incorporates nostalgic nods to pop-rock, synth-punk and synthwave bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s, as well as influences from acts like Neon Trees and The 1975.
The vocals are crisp and the tune is catchy, making you bob along your head almost immediately. Lyrically, the group explores themes such as self-empowerment and relationships, creating an encapsulating listening experience for their audience.
Internet Tears dropped its self-titled debut EP in 2021, and followed the project’s release with a variety of popular singles, including ‘Over me?’, ‘Okay’ and ‘Death And His Friends’. Of which we reviewed latest, which can be found here. Now that they signed a record deal with independent Connecticut label Black Barrel Records, they released the second of a series of singles titled ‘I Want You’. It dives into the feeling of falling for someone new, perfectly.
The song talks about wanting to ask someone to be in a relationship and how much you just want to be with them. A feeling everyone will be able to relate to. It’s about acceptance, connection and love. Oftentimes those songs have a hint of melancholy or heartache to them. This release, however, spreads a positive message in a sea of negative songwriting. The instrumental and lyrics are poppy and upbeat, talking about the initial stage of euphoria, rather than the aftermath. It’s a song about falling in love rather than falling out of love, an uplifting and positive anthem for all of the people that haven’t quite asked their crush out yet.
With its pop-rock and synth-punk influences, followed by the sweet sound of the saxophone, the band created a sound that has potential to become a crowd pleaser. Lyrics like “I just wanna let you know that I’ve been wanting you for so long and that’s the reason that I sing this song”, feel like just the right words to scream in your room, preparing yourself to ask that one person out. Therefore anyone that has ever had or currently has a crush on someone should take this release as encouragement and finally ask them out.
