Shawn Mendes is back with new music! The singer released two new songs for his upcoming new album on August 9th: ‘Isn’t That Enough’ and ‘Why Why Why’. Both these songs show a more reflective and mature side of the singer, in his music as well as in his lyrics.
‘Isn’t That Enough’ is a calm song that leans more towards folk music than the pop music we’re used to from Mendes. This different sound allows Mendes to explore deeper emotions and showcase his personal growth as both an individual and a musician.
‘Isn’t That Enough’ feels very personal, since it focuses on love and self-worth. Listeners can resonate with this song as it delves deeper into the question of love in a world full of expectations and pressures. “Gone are the birds, close are the tears. A house full of love, space for your fears”. Mendes’ voice comes off very strong from the beginning, despite it being a vulnerable song. He knows how to deliver these strong emotions of the song to his listeners, without overdoing it vocally.
Mendes released another song on the same day, called ‘Why Why Why’. This song also sounds more folk and indie, and again shows a whole different side to Mendes, a more honest and vulnerable side. While ‘Isn’t That Enough’ focuses more on holding onto love in a life full of societal expectations and pressures, ‘Why Why Why’ holds a message of confusion and frustration. The song title itself refers to this feeling of being trapped in a moment where nothing seems to change even though time is moving forward. This provides a sense of sensibility that might be considered new to his music. Listeners might again resonate with this song about personal struggles and longing for answers to these questions that keep us up at night. “I don’t know why, I don’t know why, why why why”. This song, again, showcases Mendes’ incredible vocal range and vocal stability.
Both these songs show Mendes’ evolution as both a lyricist and musician, and present him as a popstar who is not afraid to show his true and deepest emotions, while also taking a risk in his musical creation. These songs pave the way for his new album, Shawn, which comes out on October 18th this year, and based on this album title, there will probably be more vulnerable, honest, and personal music coming our way!
