Song Review: ‘Jinn’ by Engrave

Detroit based 4 piece metalcore band Engrave just released their brand new song ‘Jinn’ on December 8th. The explosive single caught Melomaniacs attention so we are reviewing it for you today.

As soon as it starts, you are sucked in by an intense bass-driven intro. The drums and the guitars assemble in a sick riff that warns you you’re in for a ride.

The vibes of the song switch on the verses. Incredibly soft and breezy, almost breathy vocals mix with the bass and drums. It’s always nice hearing the deep-toned sounds shine through and it manages to support the gentle tone perfectly. Lead singer Brad DiLorenzo brings out absolute delicacy and raw emotions through both stormy screaming and mellow vocals, and it’s the perfect mix for a well rounded metalcore song.

“Looking back on memories I can still recall the pain. Breathing in when you shut down. Do you remember my name?”

Although the vocals are very delicate, the lyrics are deep, painful and moving.

“It may be we lost our way, burning every plan we made. Feeding in as you fade out, will it ever be the same?”

The chorus is catchy, fiery and just the correct combination of emotions come out of the intense instrumental and voice. With a bridge that gives off La Dispute (props to the almost spoken screaming), we are eased into a first heavy breakdown that’s somehow also very ambient. We are also in for a little treat with a second breakdown which sounds very electric and serves as an outro to the song. It’s a way to end the single with just the right amount of energy.

Overall, ‘Jinn’ is the perfect amount of explosivity and emotions, and is full of sonorous Easter-eggs that help you dive into the song completely. We cannot wait to hear more and are stoked to see where Engrave will take us next. To support the quartet, check out the band’s merchandise site here!
