Song Review: ‘Lonely Dancers’ by Conan Gray

Only days after announcing his third studio album, Found Heaven, Conan Gray has released his new single ‘Lonely Dancers’. Despite its upbeat tempo and lively energy, the song holds quite a sad meaning behind it. There is no denying that Gray feels a great loss from a former relationship.

With lyrics such as “We’re both alone now, tears in our eyes” and “We’re lonely dancers, baby / Dance with me so we don’t cry” it seems as if Conan is looking for some sort of escape from his emotions but is also letting others know they’re not alone.

The song holds a strong eighties synth-infused sound and is co-produced by Max Martin, ILYA and Oscar Holter. Once again, the singer showcases his vocal range, starting in a low register and leading up to his usual angelic higher voice in the verses.

Three other singles that’ll appear on his upcoming album: ‘Winner’, ‘Never Ending Song’ and ‘Killing Me’ were released late 2023 and early 2024, demonstrating the change in Gray’s genre. Coming from a more pop-focused style to a more guitar-filled genre with hints of the eighties demonstrates the Gen Z star’s blossoming maturity, and almost feels as if you’ve grown up right beside him.

The singer teased his upcoming studio album by posting “Conan needs your help revealing the name of his new album” on his website, followed by “there are 11 posters in 11 record stores across the world. Each poster reveals one letter from the album title.”

With Valentine’s Day coming up, ‘Lonely Dancers’ arrived just in time for dancing away your sorrows and sadness.

The release of ‘Lonely Dancers’ also came with a music video, which you can watch here.
