Song Review: ‘Love Me Better’ by Corbyn Besson

After teasing his fans for over a month, former Why Don’t We member Corbyn Besson released a new solo single on February 7th, 2024, titled ‘Love Me Better’. On his TikTok, Besson has stated that this song is about breaking free from someone who doesn’t treat you right, and is meant to encourage people to treat themselves better. This message is likely to resonate with many fans, as a lot of people have at least one experience of dealing with a toxic person in their life.

Lyrics such as “I’ll do the things that you never did for me, I’ll care the way that I wish that you would” paired with the uplifting melody gives the listener a lot of positive energy, making you feel motivated to end toxic relationships and be kinder to yourself. This positive energy builds steadily throughout the song: the first verse and pre-chorus feel like a summer morning full of potential, which explodes into a high-energy party vibe in the chorus.

However, the song also recognises how difficult it is to take this step and choose yourself over someone else: “It’s easy to stay, but harder to go. When you make me feel like this, I try to leave it alone, don’t know why I don’t”. This further emphasises how freeing it is when you finally do manage to make this choice, and, as Besson sings, “fuck it imma love me better”.
