Song Review: ‘Mirage’ by OneRepublic

OneRepublic collaborated on a song with video game franchise Assassin’s Creed for the release of their newest game Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which will be released in two weeks’ time. They’re also collaborating with rising Saudi star Mishaal Tamer, who was OneRepublic’s opening act on their 2023 summer tour.

The vibe and tone of the song are definitely set from the start: the tension-building intro from the guitar to the deep vocals  of OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder. The song builds up even more  by the countering deep voice of Ryan in the verses and chorus, and his higher pitched vocals during the pre-chorus. Add some electric guitar in the second verse and Mishaal’s low-pitched Arabian bridge, and you’re completely immersed in the meaning of the song title: ‘Mirage’. Mirage refers to an unrealistic hope or wish that cannot be achieved. “Is it just a mirage?” is repeated over and over again during the chorus, in combination with some electronic beats. The corresponding videoclip shows images of both music artists, as well as the video game and showcases the dark and desperate feel of the song, which naturally fits perfectly with the mysteriousness of the Assassin’s Creed  franchise.

As Tedder mentioned before, as long as they like the song, the band will never shy away from new and other genres. OneRepublic will never be tied to one specific genre. This song showcases that in its fullest form. Although, for some it might be a song they have to get used to after their previous singles ‘I Ain’t Worried’ and ‘Runaway’, this is yet another OneRepublic song that will easily get stuck in your head.
