Song Review: ‘Sleepless’ by Beyond Confidence

Hailing from Stuttgart, Germany, Beyond Confidence has been making music as a band for a little over five years now. Currently, the band consists of lead singer Nico Dachtler, guitarists Dominik Botler and Sven Bürger, bassist Kilian, and drummer Heiko Müller. The band’s discography is a mix of alternative rock, metal, and (post-)hardcore, and a lovely recent addition to the long list of German rock bands. On the 9th of May, they released their latest single ‘Sleepless’.

The song opens with a short piano intro before the other, heavier instruments kick in. The guitars and bass are shredded, and the drums are banged on to make intense noise. For the first verse, the instruments make room for the piano and Dachtler’s vocals to shine through. A drum beat can still be heard in the background throughout. Dachtler opens the track with the lyrics “If there was a way to disappear, so that those you love won’t have to shed a tear”. The song talks about suicidal thoughts and being unable to shut them out. In the second verse, Dachtler sings how “we all wear our masks so well, while deep inside caught in our silent hell”. He talks about feeling the need to hide his emotions from the people around him.

While these verses are quite soft compared to the song’s intro, the choruses are as heavy as can be, with all the instruments joining in together to create a beautiful crescendo. In the final pre-chorus, Dachtler sings about a “quiet ache, a silent scream, that never fades away”. While he might be unable to share his feelings with anyone in real life, the listener is allowed to hear these dark thoughts and might be able to find comfort knowing that they are not alone. The song builds up to a mostly instrumental bridge with faraway vocals screaming out some of the lyrics in the background, making the listener feel the true desperation in the singer’s voice. Finally, the song ends with one more chorus that tones everything down a little after the bridge, but quickly becomes the song’s heavy climax.

‘Sleepless’ is a modern-sounding emo anthem with hard-hitting instrumentals that just want to make the listener jump up and scream along. The song was written entirely by Dachtler, who has stated he wants to take people “on a sentimental rollercoaster” with his music. Over the summer, Beyond Confidence will be performing ‘Sleepless’ and their other amazing tracks at festivals all over Germany. The band will also be releasing their debut album in the fall of this year, so stay tuned for more hardcore anthems from the five-piece over the next few months!
