Song Review: ‘Supposed To Be’ by Alessandra

It‘s time to update your happy songs playlist, because Norwegian-Italian singer Alessandra just released the self love anthem of the summer. The track, which is called ‘Supposed To Be’, came out on May 24th and is nothing but pure joy.

21-year-old Alessandra is known for creating music that bursts with confidence; her most famous song, ‘Queen of Kings’, is a testament to that, as is her debut EP, which she released earlier this year.

But the (self) love and optimism is not only evident in her songs: if you‘ve seen Alessandra live before, or even just follow her on social media, you‘ll know that she is a ray of sunshine and makes a point of constantly spreading love and positivity. At the same time, she is refreshingly honest about her internal struggles and insecurities, creating music that is both relatable and comforting.

‘Supposed To Be’ combines these qualities – it’s a song about her coming-out journey, a very personal topic which gives it a certain vulnerability while simultaneously celebrating the beauty of self-acceptance. Alessandra has been very open about her sexuality and recently said that she is “not afraid of love in any form”.

It already starts off with an exciting tune, immediately setting the mood. The first verse immaculately builds up the hype that culminates in a radiant chorus which even sports some early 2010s vibes. As always, Alessandra‘s incredible vocals give the song the extra kick. While she opens the song with her smooth lower register, her powerful high notes come through in the chorus and the bridge. The highlight of the song is the exciting pre-chorus that includes the line “I’ll be dancing in the clouds, even when rain is pouring down”, which sums up the essence of the song. ‘Supposed To Be‘ is fast-paced, upbeat and fun. The lyrics are unapologetic and empowering. Simply put, it‘s pop perfection and definitely a highlight in Alessandra‘s already impressive career.

She already debuted ‘Supposed To Be’ on her European headline tour at the beginning of this year where it was met with lots of love. Unsurprisingly, since it‘s the perfect song to dance along and sing your heart out to.
